# Planet portraits

NASA-hosted photographs and photographic composites, downloaded 24 September 2026 from [About the Planets](https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/planets/) and [Saturn](https://science.nasa.gov/saturn/).

The thumbnails retain the NASA-hosted 512-pixel images. `closeups/` holds the larger versions from the same URLs, requested with `w=2048` (1920 × 1080, or 998 × 561 for Saturn). SVG display crops and masks remove surrounding black space; Saturn's rings remain visible. These are historical portraits, not live photos or representations of each planet's current surface orientation.

Planet body diameters follow the [NASA NSSDCA fact sheet](https://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/factsheet/). All bodies share one enlarged size scale, separate from orbital distances. Saturn's rings extend beyond its scaled body. The Sun is a symbolic marker. Close-ups fit each photograph independently to the viewer; the diameter beside it provides its actual size.
